PICTURE EXCHANGE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM FOR NON-VERBAL INDIVIDUALS PECS for non-verbal individuals
How to cite (linguiverse) :
The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a desktop-based communication tool developed to assist individuals, particularly those with speech or communication difficulties, in expressing their needs and thoughts through visual symbols or pictures.
The primary objectives of this project are to develop an offline, user-friendly Picture Exchange Communication System that facilitates non-verbal communication and enables users to express their needs and emotions effectively. The system aims to ensure full compatibility with common desktop environments, making it easily accessible for use in schools, therapy centers, and homes.
This project utilized the Agile methodology, specifically the Scrum framework, to allow adaptive planning and rapid development of the Pictorial Exchange Communication System (PECS).
The Sunshine PECS system was tested by the client, a SPED (Special Education) teacher, who acted as an actual user to evaluate the system’s usability and effectiveness. The teacher reported positive feedback, stating that the interface was intuitive, the images were clear, and the text-to-speech output was accurate and helpful for non-verbal students. The UAT confirmed that the system is user-friendly, functional, and suitable for classroom and therapy use.
